Peggy Spiekermann Obituary

Peggy Jolene Oestreich was born to Roberta (Land) and Alex Oestreich on February 21, 1934, at her grandparents' home in Castell, Texas. She slipped away into the arms of the Christ on January 23, 2023, at home in Burnet, with her husband by her side. Peggy lived in Castell until the local school closed and the family moved to Llano so she could continue her education. She graduated at 16, valedictorian of her class at Llano High School. She attended business college in San Antonio, then stayed to work at GPM Life. On a weekend visit home in Llano in 1952, she met Ernest Spiekermann, a young military recruit. They married three months later; this past August they celebrated their 70th anniversary. Peggy and Ernest's life in the military led them to Johnston Island, Hawaii, Germany, and Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, finally circling back to San Antonio. There Peggy earned her degree in education from St. Mary's University and began a 34 year teaching career in San Antonio and later, Burnet. Peggy and Ernest moved to Burnet in 1974. She taught second grade at Burnet Elementary until her retirement. She was an active member of the First Christian Church where she sang in the choir and served on mission trips with Ernest. She was an expert seamstress and a doting grandmother. She loved music and books and teaching, but most of all in her later years she loved evening walks with her beloved husband. Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, Roberta McDermott and Alex Oestreich, and brother Gene Oestreich. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Ernest Spiekermann; son, Wayne Spiekermann (Margot); daughter, Tina Steve (Elton); sister, Connie Richardson (Gary); sister in law, Loretta Oestreich; nine grandchildren, more than twenty great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, February 4, 2023, at First Christian Church, 206 E. Graves, Burnet, Texas. A reception will follow. All are welcome to join in the gathering.
