Lutz Gunter Henschel, born in Ludwigsfeld, Germany on July 18, 1957, to parents, Kurt and Ingebord Henschel, passed way peacefully on September 15, 2023, at the age of 66 with his wife Nicole and his son, Holden, lovingly by his side. He had lost his struggle against cancer.
Lutz and his brother, Tilo, had a carefree and happy childhood with loving parents who adored them both. His family had been bakers for generations, and he continued in that tradition as a young adult. But, living in communist East Berlin, he realized that he was still lacking something. That something was freedom! He then courageously and perilously made his way out of the GDR (Deutsch Demokratische Republik) and immigrated to the United States. He made his way to Fredericksburg, Texas as had so many generations of Germans before him and was able to enjoy the freedom that he was denied in the GDR. In the process, he continued his family tradition of being a baker and established the Old German Bakery in Fredericksburg as a favorite destination for locals and visitors alike. He was so proud to achieve a dream of his when he became a U. S. Citizen. His first love may have been family, but his second love was most definitely baking. He will always be remembered for his strength, love, and his devotion to his wife, son, and his German family.
Lutz is survived by his wife, Nicole; son, Holden; brother, Tilo and Tilo’s wife Ingrid, and their daughter Jeanette; brother-in-law, Brett Norvell, and his bakery wife, Isaura Ibarra. He was predeceased by his father, Kurt Henschel, and his mother, Ingebord Henschel.
Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers for the Henschel family. A memorial will be set for a later date.
