John (Jack) Butler was born February 7,1933 in Ennis, Texas to Roger Vernon Butler, SR, and Helen Mexia Anderson, third of three children, Roger, JR and Janice Butler. Soon his family
moved to Dallas where his dad worked for United Gas Company until his sudden death in 1938.
United Gas gave his mom a job, but it meant moving the family to Shreveport, LA. Jack graduated
from Shreveport Byrd High School in 1951, and Jack began working for United Gas in the mail-
room. In 1952 by accident they pulled files on 19 year olds and selected Jack. He immediately
joined the Navy. He spent 4 years sailing to Japan, Korea, China, Hawaii, and the Philippines.He was released from the Navy with the rank of END2
By the time he returned home, his mother and stepfather, Don Hyde, had moved to Buchanan Dam,
so he came to Texas. This is where Cissy entered his life. She was working for the Presbyterian
Parish in Buchanan Dam and Burnet. They were married at the Burnet Presbyterian Church in 1958
and made Burnet their home. They had two children, Camilla (Becky) and Jack Boggs Butler, both
graduates of Burnet High School.
Jack attended the University of Houston (Diesel Mechanics) and University of Texas for one year
before working construction jobs until he was hired by the United Post Office in 1966 as a letter
carrier. He retired from the Burnet Post Office in 1992 and worked part time at the Edgar Funeral
Home and Flower Shop for Pauline Berry. When Edgar's sold to Jenkins, he continued working
until he "retired' again in 2018.
He became a member of the Burnet Presbyterian Church in 1965 where he served as an elder until
his death. He was an Assistant Scout Master under E. B. Kinsey and then became Scoutmaster.
He earned the Silver Beaver in 1978.In 1994 he was made Burnet Honor Citizen where Tex
Robertson named him 'the Butler dunnit". At the time of his death, he was serving on the Board of
the Burnet Housing Authority. He was a member of the Kingsland American Legion Post for 42
years, the Korean Veterans Association, and the National Association of Letter Carriers Chapter
in Austin, TX.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents, stepfather Don Hyde, and brother Roger Butler, JR.
He is survived by his wife Cissy, daughter Camilla Houy and husband Bill, two granddaughters
Patti and Jen and their families, all of Pennsylvania, son Jack Butler and wife Denise, of Keller
Texas, two granddaughters, Julia of Haslet, Nikki and Alec Heierman of Colorado. sister Janice
Mills of Bossier, Louisiana, and many nieces and nephews.
No services are planned at this time. Memorials may be made to the Burnet Presbyterian,
Box 126, Burnet, Texas or LACare. Arrangements under the care of Jenkins Funeral Home,
Burnet, Texas.
