Grace Marie Burkhart Maxwell

Grace was born on January 24, 1932 in San Gabriel, TX. She was the youngest of six children born to Henry Clay Burkhart and Annie Belle (Shelton) Burkhart. Grace grew up in and around Taylor, TX until the family left the farm and moved to Austin where she attended Austin High School.

A private Graveside service is to be held for Mrs. Maxwell.

As a young woman Grace worked as a page in the Texas Legislature and then for the Texas Department of Public Safety. She ultimately went to work at the then city-owned Brackenridge Hospital where she started as a unit clerk, then became the secretary for the School of Vocational Nursing. Grace then moved into the Admissions Office and finally as a patient account representative in the hospital’s Insurance Office. She retired from “Brack” after 30 years of service.

Grace met the love of her life, J.T. Maxwell, in the summer of 1957 when fate had them stopped next to each other at a traffic light. They both were driving Ford Fairlanes and J.T. challenged her to race. Instead they went for a cup of coffee and they ended up getting married on December 23, 1957 and were happily married until J.T.’s death on April 1, 2006.

Grace is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three brothers Raymond, Lewis, and Floyd; and two sisters Oleta and Dorothy. 

She is survived by her son Jerry T. Maxwell and wife Teri; four grandchildren Millette Fisher, Lance Guerrero and wife Jennifer, Shannon Maxwell and wife Amy, and Jordan T. Maxwell; five great grandchildren Anthony, Mason, Hannah, Jacqueline, and Ava; one great great granddaughter Ella Grace; and numerous nieces and nephews.
