Dr. James Gray Gunn passed away in the early morning hours of Tuesday, September 9, 2025 in Burnet, Texas.
Jim was born in Pecos, Texas on May 9, 1952. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas. He was a lifelong educator, working as a math teacher, then as a vice-principal and eventually a principal in Pecos. Jim went on to earn his doctorate at The University of Texas at Austin. He became Superintendent of Schools in Georgetown, Texas in 1988 where he showed his excellent leadership skills and commitment to the district by serving students, teachers, staff, and the community with untiring dedication for over 15 years.
Jim retired to his cherished lake house on Lake L.B.J. where he enjoyed working on home projects and visiting with local friends. He was always excited to have family gather with him at the lake. He also greatly enjoyed travelling, exploring the country with his wife Jackie and organizing many memorable family trips. He was never happier than when he was spending time with his grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his wife, Jackie Gunn; his two sisters, Kitty Ann Gunn and Faye Johnson and her husband Ken Johnson; his five children Brian Gunn, Owen Gunn and his wife Rayvin Gunn, Susan Henson and her husband Cody Henson, Dean Bowers, and Julie Bowers; and his five grandchildren Grey Henson, Hank Henson, Grant Henson, Isaac Fendel, and Jacob Fendel.
