Dorothy (Dot) Marie James, 93, of Burnet, Texas, peacefully passed away on August 8, 2022. She lived a spirited life dedicated to her family, friends, and to her communities. Dorothy was admired for her witty humor and intellectual wisdom. She was born March 27, 1929, in Mineral Wells, Texas, to Samuel and Lessie Varner. On November 8, 1952, she married her soulmate, Roy Clarence James. While living on Lake Travis they raised children, BK and Randall, and enjoyed entertaining on their boat dock preparing fresh catfish and crab boil. Dorothy was an expert demonstrating how to eat crawfish. She and Roy celebrated life together for 40 years. She was the happiest when her children, and the grands and greats visited and played at the lake. She often remarked her favorite spot was sitting on her front porch looking at the lake and watching the world go by. Whenever one told Dorothy, “I love you!”, she immediately responded with, “I love you more! And don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!” All was said with a twinkle in her eye and a big smile.
Dorothy was employed for twenty-one years as Corporate Secretary/Treasurer of Night Hawk Frozen Food Company. She was President of the Austin/Travis County American Heart Association and volunteered with the Austin Aqua Festival for 20 years serving as Commodore in 1995.
In 1989 Dorothy and Roy moved to the calmer, less crowded shores of Lake Buchanan. She served as President or Chairperson for the Burnet Chamber of Commerce, Seton Highland Lakes Hospital Advisory Board, Burnet County Republican Club, East Lake Buchanan Community Association, Burnet County TRIAD, Boys and Girls Club of Burnet, Highland Lake Boys and Girls Club Board. She was chairperson for the Annual Burnet Bluebonnet Festival for fifteen years and served as the Burnet County Liaison for State Representative Jimmie Don Aycock for five years. Dorothy enjoyed the East Lake Buchanan Ladies League, Friends of the Library, and the Fellowship of Christian Women.
In 2004 she received the Burnet Outstanding Citizen Award, and in 2006 she was named the Honor Citizen for Outstanding Contributions to Burnet Community. In 2018 she was recognized as the Outstanding Volunteer for Burnet. This award now bears her name.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters ( Ellen, Sammy, and June), husband (Roy), grandson (Kyle), and nephew (Ray). She is survived by daughter (Beverly-BK), son (Randall), grandson (Corey, wife Lauren), granddaughter (Samantha, husband Chance), great grandchildren (Jax, Reagan, Wyatt, Milo, Jackson, Benjamin), nieces (Sharon and Vicki), nephew (Bruce), and a host of dear neighbors and friends.
