Darrell Keith Gowery, age 93, of Wynot, Nebraska, died Tuesday, April 21, at Windchime Assisted Living Center in Kingsland, Texas.
Darrell was born on April 20, 1927 in Wynot, Nebraska. He attended Wynot Public School, where he graduated from in 1945. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, and after returning home, married the love of his life, Darlene Irene Brown, on June 5, 1949. They lived on a farm near Obert, Nebraska, where they farmed, raised livestock, and owned a small grocery store. They moved to Laurel, Nebraska and in the mid-60’s, bought Harper’s Store, and then later built Gowery’s Shopping Center at a different location. They owned and operated Gowery’s Shopping Center for 17 years. After retirement, they spent their winters in south Texas and their summers at their lakehouse at Walker Valley View, and then later Brookey Bottom.
Darrell enjoyed many summers boating, skiing, and fishing on Lewis and Clark Lake. He also enjoyed the time he spent on Brookey Bottom and took pride in keeping his property looking like a park. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was known as Papa to them. They loved his fun nature and sense of humor.
Darrell is survived by two children and spouses Randy and Lisa Gowery of Wynot, and Kim and Alan Rainbolt of Marble Falls, Texas, five grandchildren all from Texas, and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Darrell was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Darlene, parents George and Sarah Leota Gowery, sister Joyce Asmussen, brother Harley Gowery, and grandson Tyrone Gowery.
A memorial service is being planned in the summer in Wynot.
