John Charles Williams(Charles & maybe Charlie to some) was born in Rising Star, TX, May 26, 1943, to David Andrew Williams and Beulah Lucille Carmichael Williams. His family soon moved to San Saba, TX, where he attended school through his high school graduation. He then went to Cisco Junior College where he played tennis for two years, then moved to Texas Tech University and played tennis. He and his school buddies spent many hours at the tennis courts in San Saba and his doubles partner and the singles players made more than one trip to State Tennis Tournament and his senior year both single and doubles team won State. The small town boy even traveled to Chicago, IL for the National Junior College finals.
Charles met Dodie Schooley in February, 1966, through his little brother Jerry and at that time her roommate Mary who later became their sister-in-law. Charles and Dodie married June 1, 1968, in Fredonia, TX.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his older brother David Gene Williams, who passed on October 7, 2021, exactly one year from Charles, his youngest brother Jerry Lee Williams.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Dodie (Gloria) Schooley Williams; his daughter Mitzi Lancaster (Clint) from New Braunfels TX, his daughter Marsha Hammond (Scott)from Beorne, TX; his granddaughter Prestley Hammond, two grandsons, Pryce Hammond, Cash Lancaster; and granddaughter Avery Lancaster McKinney (Evan) of Midland; one sister Alice Jane Allen of San Saba; a brother Mike Williams (Martha) of San Angelo; brother-in-law Jimmy Schooley of Mason. Many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews and many loving friends he loved like family.
Charles and Dodie moved to Fredonia where he farmed peanuts with his father-in-law and brother-in-law for four years and Charles decided he better go back to Texas Tech and give farming a rest. He coached atLubbock High School after getting his teaching degree, then moved to Sweetwater where he coached football, track and baseball for four years, leaving west Texas then to the coastal bend area in Beeville, TX, he coached football, track and baseball for two years before becoming a high school assistant principal for two years. In 1983 he moved to Burnet, TX, and Charles became an elementary principal for 21 years. Young people have been his life and he enjoyed watching all sports at all levels.
Charles has been involved with Bandina Christian Youth Camp\Waldrum Session for 41, directing the session since 2007 and has served on the Board of Directors of the Camp for many years. Campers always came first and each camp session was going to be better than the last. He was a member of Vanderveer Street Church of Christ where he served as a deacon and elder. His funeral service will be Wednesday, October 12, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation/viewing at 10 a.m. at Vanderveer Street Church of Christ, Burnet, TX. Burial will be at Wagram Cemetery in Fredonia, TX.
