Carole Oathout Obituary

Carole Rae (Dale) Oathout, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died peacefully in her sleep in her home in Burnet, TX, on April 4, 2023.

A service will be held at Hill Country Fellowship at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 11, 2023.

Carole was born on May 11, 1942, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Clair and Audrey (Nordeen) Dale.  Carole grew up in Council Bluffs and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1960. She loved spending time at her grandparent’s farm in Iowa.

Carole married Gary on June 15, 1963, and moved to Indiana in 1965. They lived there until 1983, when they moved to Wasilla, Alaska. She and Gary headed for warmer weather in Texas in 2019.
She was a devoted wife and was married to her husband, Gary, for almost 60 years.  Spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren meant the world to her, and her family fiercely loved her.  Carole loved going out on the “Logan J” fishing for halibut in Homer. She loved it best when her grandchildren came along.

Carole spent hours reeling in fish and having a blast. She had a beautiful voice and often entertained her grandchildren with songs.  She welcomed her grandchildren’s friends into her home, hosted many slumber parties, and attended countless sporting events.

She selflessly helped care for her oldest grandson, Logan, during his leukemia treatment.  Her breast cancer diagnosis came shortly after and she never complained about symptoms throughout her treatment.  Several years later, she cared for her daughter, Kelly, who also underwent cancer treatment.  There was nothing she would not do for her family.

Carole’s big and beautiful smile made everyone around her feel special.  She was a fantastic cook and often supplied spectacular meals for her family, friends, and the meal ministry in her church.  She was very compassionate and the first to offer to help when someone had a need.  She was a wise and humble woman with a quiet demeanor.  She had the finesse to provide words of wisdom to avoid offending others.  Carole loved to travel and visited Israel, Haiti, Peru, and Europe.  Carole loved flowers and enjoyed gardening.

Despite suffering many losses, Carole’s faith was never shaken, and her love for Jesus shone through her.  Carole will be remembered by everyone who had the honor to know her.  She has often been described as genuine, proper, compassionate, kind, and intelligent.   Her loss leaves an enormous void, but we know she is in Heaven, praising Jesus and visiting with her family and friends.

Carole is survived by her husband, Gary Oathout, son, Mark Oathout (Sharmin), and daughter Kelly Marre (Patrick). Grandchildren Casey Marre, Michelle Albright (James), Meghan McNiven (Kirk), Melissa Lytwyn (Geoff), Kyle Oathout (Natalie), great-grandchildren Olivienne, Ailynn, Boe, Paisley, and Violet.  Carole was preceded in death by her parents Clair and Audrey Dale, her sister, Judith Barton, brother Terry Dale, and her grandson, Logan Marre.

A later service (TBD) will occur at Church on the Rock in Wasilla.
In place of flowers, the family suggests donating to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or the American Cancer Society.
